Started: before 10/1/23
Finished:
The kids bought me a pound of carded mohair for my birthday. I had done a couple of samples with the spindles, but when I got the spinning wheels, I was very excited to try it. It went much more easily with the spinning wheel. I told them I would make them hats for Christmas - there are 5 kids (four kids and a +1).
I started by spinning a bobbin of mohair. I wasn't sure if the mohair alone would be enough for five hats, so I decided to ply it with some wool. I found a black wool in the roving my uncle gave me, so I went with that.
2023.09.22 - Finished the first ply of the first skein.
2023.09.27 - Finished the second ply, then plyed them together. I thought the black wool was natural, but my fingers were smudged when I spun it, so I think it is dyed.
2023.09.28 - Washed the first skein and started the 2nd skein. The water came out almost the color of apple juice, and I think it's because some of the wool was dyed a gold-ish color. When it's spun and plyed with the brown mohair, you can't really see the gold, so I'm not worried. But after six washes, the water was still tinted.
2023.10.15 - At this point, I have finished the 2nd skein, the wool ply for the 3rd skein, and am working on the mohair ply for the 3rd skein.
Skein #1: 2-ply; 50% mohair, 50% wool; 261 yds.; 5 oz.; 16wpi
Skein #2: 2-ply; 50% mohair, 50% wool; 216 yds; 4.7 oz.; 16 wpi
Skein #3: 2-ply; 50% mohair, 50% wool; 238 yds; 4.4 oz.; 16 wpi
Hat #1
Used 2/3 of one skein.
Not knowing how the yarn would work, I went pretty basic with the first hat. I decided to knit the hats because knitting uses a little less yarn than crochet. I made up the pattern as I went, and the shaping went ok. My written pattern handles the shaping much better.
Also, after making a couple of the hats, they are quite heavy and very drape-y. I'm glad I went with knitting, because I think crocheting them would have made them heavier. I might crochet one at the end, just to see.
Hat #2
I'm trying to make each hat different, but I may run out of ideas. Lol. This second hat uses an eyelet rib, and I'm really happy with the result.
